Na al die jaren moést het er van komen, een boek over de vele
fanboottochten vanuit Scheveningen naar de diverse radiozendschepen die
voor de Nederlandse in de ether waren in de periode 1972 - 31 augustus
1974. Nadien ging het met Zeeland Charters naar de MV Mi Amigo die voor de Engelse kust lag. Nog later werd naar het nieuwe Caroline zendschip, de Ross Revenge en naar de MV Communicator van Laser 558 gevaren. SMC heeft honderden mensen naar deze drijvende zenders gebracht en hen de dag van hun leven bezorgd toen ze aan boord konden gaan om te praten dj’s en technici. Vroeger,
in mijn prille jeugd, bestond er zo iets als ‘Prentenboeken’, waarin heel veel
platen stonden afgedrukt met daarbij altijd een kort stukje verklarende tekst.
Het waren deze teksten die me, in herinnering, urenlang aan het dromen konden
zetten over het onderwerp die de platen beschreven. Later begreep ik dat wat ik
aan het bedenken en dromen was, een soort van ‘beeld denken’ was ofwel de
complete realiteit achter het vertoonde voor mezelf openbaar te maken.
Goed afgestemd 100 jaar radio is een zeer recent verschenen publicatie van
uitgeverij Scriptum, waarbij meer dan 180 prachtige foto’s en afbeeldingen zijn
afgedrukt in een boek dat op de voorkant een radio heeft en zwaar in de hand is,
alsof het de zwaarte heeft van een historisch radiotoestel. Afbeeldingen die
tevens zijn afgedrukt op super kwaliteitspapier. De verbindende teksten zijn
gemaakt door Hans Pars, die tevens verantwoordelijk is voor de keuze van de
foto’s en afbeeldingen in het boek.
Hans Pars had in zijn jeugd een
vader met liefde voor de radio en wat er daarin en omheen gebeurde. Als 11
jarige werd hij op een bepaalde dag uit zijn bed gehaald waarna zijn vader hem
piepjes liet horen, die op de radio waren te ontvangen. Het bleken signalen die
werden uitgezonden afkomstig van de allereerste – door de Sovjet Unie – in de
ruimte geschoten kunstmaan. Het is hem altijd als een historisch moment
bijgebleven. Alle mensen, die de middelbare leeftijd hebben bereikt, zullen zich
– al nadenkend – beseffen dat voor hen de radio in de jeugd een veel
belangrijker medium is geweest dan de televisie heden ten dage voor de jongeren
is. Telkens maar werden we via de berichtgeving op de radio aan het denken gezet
om een beeld te vormen bij datgene werd verteld aan de luisteraar.
Maar
wie zaten er achter de stemmen, die via de diverse omroepen en buitenlandse
stations konden worden gehoord? Sporadisch kwamen we foto’s tegen van
presentatoren en uitvoerenden. Slechts diegene die zich beroepsmatig met de
radio bezig hielden kwamen binnen de omroepen de anderen tegen, waar weer een
stem aan was verbonden. Voor de gemiddelde luisteraar was het een kwestie van
beeldvorming, waarbij een echte confrontering tot verbazende reacties kon leiden.
Het boek: Goed afgestemd 100 jaar radio is volledig bezaaid met foto’s en
afbeeldingen die met het geliefde onderwerp radio te maken hebben.
Samensteller Hans Pars heeft een meesterwerk van het boek gemaakt, waarbij hij
een keuze gemaakt heeft uit de honderdduizenden, hem via het Nationale Archief /
Spaarnestad Photo, beschikbare foto’s. Ik zie het, al beeld denkend, voor me.
Pars zit achter een computer van het Nationale Archief en heeft het
zoekprogramma opgestart en voert diverse zoektermen in, waarbij ‘radio’ de
voornaamste is. Kassa, vele voorbeelden zijn oproepbaar. Hij heeft er in: Goed
afgestemd 100 jaar radio een prachtcollectie van gemaakt waarbij niet alleen een
kijkje binnen de radiostudio’s en aanlengende ruimtes wordt getoond, maar ook
een grote keuze aan foto’s wordt getoond inzake de radio als object. Zo is de
eerste geplaatste foto er een uit mei 1924 waarop een Engelsman is afgebeeld met
een ‘hoofdtelefoon’ op zijn hoofd en met in zijn hand een wandelstok. Beiden
zijn met elkaar verbonden middels een draad. De wandelstok fungeerde als een
eenvoudige antenne om ontvangst op zijn oren mogelijk te maken. Welke foto dan
ook in het boek, waarbij telkens een korte maar dragende tekst door Hans Pars is
bijgevoegd, stelt me desondanks in staat te gaan turen en beeld denken. Wat de
foto’s vertellen veel meer dan alleen wat er op wordt afgebeeld. Een grote hulde
aan samensteller Hans Pars voor dit prachtige: Goed afgestemd 100 jaar radio.

Graham Gill has certainly been an
offshore radio icon for several decades, and every visitor of the annual Radio
Days in Amsterdam is looking forward to hear him singing his evergreen "Way Back
Home". Being a bit too young I unfortunately missed his programmes on Radio
London, Swinging Radio England, Britain Radio and Radio 390 off the British
coast during the 1960s. But as a 17-year-old teenager I first heard Graham on
RNI on his regular late night programmes and his Sunday evening's RNI Request
Show during the early summer of 1973. His distinctive voice fascinated and meant
a sort of RNI landmark to me. I was a bit astonished when he left RNI in June
1974 to rejoin Radio Caroline which played quite different, more adult
orientated rock music. But Graham certainly didn't disappoint his listeners as
he had no problems to adept with the hippy culture onboard the MV Mi Amigo which
he left only 11 weeks later, when the Dutch marine offences bill came into
force. It took me another 22 years to get to know Graham personally. I first met
him during the 1996 Radio Day in Haarlem. But in 2002, I came to know him even
better. We met in Harlingen at the opening of Sietse Brouwer's Dutch Radio
Caroline and we jointly attended the fabulous offshore radio reunion in London
in August of the same year. Some weeks later, I was entitled to have an
interview with Graham at the German Radio Day in Erkrath where he described his
fascinating radio career in great detail. In the meantime, we had become friends
and built confidence. In the years to come, Graham took an active part in the
Erkrath Radio Day on a regular basis and he didn't miss an Amsterdam Radio Day
anymore.
So what can I say about his long awaited book? You might think
of me as a bit prejudiced. Nevertheless let me suggest that you will be
pleasantly surprised when reading Graham's memoirs. It's the story of his life
with most of all his intriguing radio career which began in his native country
Australia where he received an full-scale training as a radio broadcaster.
Graham had been lucky to gain important experience during his 14 years in
Australian radio when he came to the UK in 1966. You may look forward to take
part in many details of these years which formed the character of the young
Australian who later had no problems to become acquainted with all these strange
new radio stations broadcasting from ships and military forts in the North Sea.
Graham particularises many interesting anecdotes concerning countless
personalities he dealt with during all those years in on- and offshore radio. At
first appearance, it might be a bit unexpected that he paints a rosy picture of
the conditions on Red Sands Fort (home of Radio 390). But this very happy period
of his life had to do with the strong feeling of a happy family that the great
team of announcers was producing. 7 years later, history repeated itself under
totally different conditions on the MV Mi Amigo where the "Caroline family"
received him with open arms. On every occasion you share Graham's desire for
gaining new experiences and getting to know interesting and warm-hearted people.
And he did succeed ever so often! I am sure you will be excellently entertained
by this capturing biography.

It’s some month ago that the postman at the post office mentioned me
that a big parcel had arrived which was too thick to push in my postal
box. Indeed, it was not only thick but also heavy. The parcel came from
England and believe it or not, Keith Skues did it once again. Pop went
the Pirates II has been released; just 15 years after the first version
came from the printers. The book is so very impressive, with many
interesting chapters which lead us to the many ins and outs in the
history of Offshore Radio. I never had before it so difficult to decide
where to begin with writing a review on a book. It was in 1994 that the
Dutch release of the book Pop went the Pirates was released on the
Annual Radio Day, that year held in Utrecht. Some months earlier the
official release took place during the celebrations that Radio Caroline
became 30 years of age! In the year that the movie ‘The boat that rocked’
was officially released in Britain and other events took place to
commemorate the success of Offshore Radio in the past, Skues hits the
headlines again with the second part of Pop went the pirates. |
So the next thing was to reread the bible Skues wrote in earlier years and
runs up till page 540 in the new edition. Wish there was a radio church and I
would love to read parts each Sunday on the pulpit, week after week to get a
brighter and shining audience. The new chapters recall the fact that still, 19
years after the last offshore station in international Western European waters
stopped transmissions, there’s still much interest amongst a certain band of
radio enthusiasts. They have of course the access to the world wide internet, so
it becomes far much easier and cheaper to get in keep in contact with each other
to communicate about their favorite medium, which was and still is offshore
radio. Of course there were, after the first edition was released in 1994, the
small offshore project of the Yugoslavian coast, as well many stations off the
Israeli coast – including the Voice of Peace. Skues also did not forget to
mention the only one weekend transmissions from ‘Offshore 98’ but most of the
memories in the book are from earlier days.
In Chapter Fourteen, ‘This could be the last time’ Skues not only memorise about
the past but tells the reader about the many so called RSL transmissions, which
have been on the air through the years to bring memories to the several offshore
radiostations which have been on the air in the past. RSL’s for RNI, Caroline,
Swinging Radio England, Radio London and many more. For some of the projects
Skues was also asked to do programmes and reading the chapter you can feel the
enthusiasm there is to relive the sounds from those golden years gone by.
Interesting to mention is that Keith has added a special short interlude about
the offshore television stations like the RTV Noordzee from the REM platform of
the Dutch coast, the Tower TV try out, Syd TV as well Odelia TV off the Israeli
coast. Attention is also paid to the projects off the Chinese coast and Radio
New York International on the MV Sarah, way back in 1987. He didn’t forget to
update the reader with what had happened to the good old lady, Radio Caroline,
since 1994. Of course the earlier mentioned RSL transmissions were there, but
also many other ways station manager Peter Moore and his team managed to bring
Radio Caroline on the air on cable networks and satellite transmissions and on
AM boomers in the former Eastern Europe Countries.
Keith also gives a look into the kitchens of the several reunions which have
been organised by several people, including Mary and Chris Payne and the Jon
Myer of the Pirate Hall of Fame; he tells the story the way the former bell of
the MV Galaxy was brought by Ron Bunninga, the captains son, to the US. This
happened when former shipmates, when the Galaxy was still the mv US Density, got
together for their reunion. Just like in his first part of Pop Went the Pirates
Keith Skues gives space to other authors. One is called Paul Rowley who wrote ‘Pirate
Memories from a BBC Political Correspondent’. Another co writer is Jenny Matthew,
a life-long fan of radio, who wrote ‘From Pram to pop’.
Of course Skues didn’t forget this years reunions, the exhibition on the Isle of
Man as well as the release of the movie ‘The Boat that rocked’. Coming to
Holland again in November for the first time in 15 years to the Annual Radio Day
in Amsterdam to be interviewed by Tom Mulder, it will be a silenced crowd during
the interview. That I know for sure as all in the big room will be listening to
the many stories Keith Skues has to tell about his own very long and wonderful
career. So, to end the review I can only tell that the bid is open to do
readings on Sunday on the pulpit. But this will only happen if you all order a
copy of this wonderful book.
